Superior Court Justice Cas Herold Was Guest Speaker Today

Posted on Friday, January 27th 2012

Superior Court Justice Cas Herold spoke at today's luncheon on "a day in the life of a judge". In fact, Justice Herold went well beyond that and gave a quick overview of our judicial system.
Superior Court Justices are appointed by the Federal Government and are selected by a 9-member panel after having made application asking to be considered. 30% of those applying get selected to sit on the bench.
Superior Courts deal with criminal, civil and family related cases, as well as bail hearings in the case of homicide. In addition to the actual court proceedings much time is spent conducting pre-trial motions.
Justice Herold is a supernumerary judge, meaning a semi-retired judge. In addition to his work in his "home" court, Guelph, he act as circuit judge in Nunavut about 4 times per year, an experience that he cherishes. In the Nunavut court room he is assisted by two elders who he consults on the appropriate sentence.
