William Christian Presents His Classification Talk

Posted on Friday, November 28th 2008

William Christian gave us a little insight into his early life which seemed to be influenced greatly by an Empire Loyalist grandmother. William was born in Queen Charlotte Island, but left there when he was 6 weeks old, never to return. He studied political science at U. of Toronto and earned a doctorate from that famous hotbed of socialism, the London School of Economics. William also met his wife in London and indeed got married there.
His first faculty position was at Mt. Allison University in Sackville, N.B.. In 1978 he joined the Political Science Dept. here at U. of G. William was a regular contributor to the Globe and Mail; for the last 8 years his contributions have appeared in the Guelph Mercury and the K.W. Record.

Mayor Karen Farbridge Delivers Her "State of the City" Address

Posted on Friday, November 21st 2008

Mayor Karen Farbidge spoke about the progress the City has made toward reaching the six strategic goals it has adopted in its effort to reach excellence in municipal governance. One of the goals, urban design and sustainable growth, is now governed by a new 25-year plan which includes provisions for an increase in residences of 54,000 by 2031. Other goals include: personal and community well being; economic opportunity; arts, culture and heritage; government and community involvement; and natural environment. The latter includes an Urban Forest Management Plan in 2009, a plan that will be of great interest to the Environment Committee.

Bob Housser Presents His Classification Talk

Posted on Friday, November 14th 2008

Bob Housser (right) was introduced by his proposer Tom Funk, Chair of the Membership Committee, Bob Housser look-alike, and Bob's next-door neighbour. Bob, a well-known photographer in Guelph, told us how he "accidentally" became a photographer. Although he had been taking photos as a youngster, Bob did not get into photography at a much later age when with a company making Swedish shelving systems in New Liskeard. The company needed photographs for promotional material and good photographers were not available in New Liskeard. And that was the start. Later, after selling the company, Bob went into photography professionally in Barrie and then in Guelph. Here he opened a studio on Wilson Street in 1994, closed it in 2007, and now works from a studio in his home.
