Dr. Mike Hammill Speaks on Marine Mammal Management in the St. Lawrence River
Posted on Sunday, November 15th 2009    Dr. Mike Hammill, son of Ken and Eileen Anne Hammill, studied biological science at the Univ. of Guelph and earned a PhD degree from McGill University. At present, he works for Fisheries and Oceans Canada and is involved in the management of marine mammals in the lower St. Lawrence River. He is stationed at Rimouski, QC., with 350 other scientists and technicians.
Mike explained the difficulties of his work having to deal wit "clients" ranging from fishermen, Inuit, environmentalists in Canda and abroad, and, of course, the 50 species of marine mammals that make the lower St. Lawrence their home. Seals and the seal hunt is at present a very controversial topic. The seal population is growing, yet the seal hunt has come under severe criticism, especially in Europe.
With the decline in fisheries in the St. Lawrence an interesting new industry is developing, that of whale watching. The income from whale related tourism is growing by leaps and bounds.
