Classification Talk by Fred Ramprashad

Posted on Saturday, January 23rd 2010

Ranjit Singh introduced Fred Ramprashad as Freddie, a friend he had gone to school with growing up in British Guiana. Both their fathers were lawyers there.
Fred grew up excelling in track and field and playing cricket. His father was very suppotive of his participation in sports although his mother, an accomplished pianist, wanted him to study the piano.
Besides his parents, Fred emphasized being influenced by Dr. Keith Ronald who hired him to become a faculty member in biological sciences at the University of Guelph in 1967. Keith was the first Dean of Biological Science in the newly formed University of Guelph. Dean Ronald and Fred cooperated in doing unique research on harp seals.
Another major influence during Fred's career at Guelph was Dr. John Powell, first Director of a new School of Human Kinetics. Fred was one of the early members of Dr. Powell's Cardiovascular Club, a noon-hour club at the University of Guelph devoted to physical fitness. Fred took the initiative to form a running club, the Nooners. For his efforts Fred received the John Powell Award in 2001.
Fred Ramprashad retired from the University of Guelph in 2005.
