Environmental Committee Reports
Posted on Monday, April 26th 2010    Jim Anderson started the Environment Committee report with a bit of history on the club's concern for the environment. He started with our contribution to the Arboretum of the University of Guelph at the club's 60th anniversary in 1980. A large number of trees were planted entitled the Rotary Tree Grove. This was renamed the Roy Hammond Tree Grove in 1999 in honour of Roy Hammond.
The Environment Committee was formed in 1990, to be responsible for environmental projects like the Guelph-Elora trail and twice yearly tree planting with the City of Guelph which started in in 1991. The tree planting is still ongoing and 20,000+ trees have been planted.
Jim reviewed Larry Kelly's contribution to this project till he passed away last fall after the fall tree planting. This is how Larry became to be known as Red Maple. Jim touched on his own involvement earning him the nickname Juniper Jim.
Jim reminded us that the spring planting this year is May 8, 9 - 11 am in Mitchell Park. We need some 40 to 50 volunteers.
